Local Actions - UCSF
Here are some things we've done in the past.
August 25, 2004
Bargaining will take place at Laurel Heights on September 7 and 8. If you would like to attend, please feel free to attend. If you use vacation time, you can be reimbursed by the Local. Please leave a message on the voice mail (415 522-9622) if you would like to attend.
We are also planning a rally at noon at Laurel Heights on September 22. The Regents are at LH that day so plan to come out and rally for a just wage increase.
Attention U.C. Clerical Workers!
Have you sustained a repetitive motion injury i.e., tendonitis
or carpal tunnel syndrome? The prevention by employers of
repetitive motion injury is the Cal Osha Law. Employers MUST
take steps to prevent these type of injuries through training
and worksite adjustment. CUE wants to determine if UC is
taking the necessary steps to prevent work situations that
create these injuries. To learn your rights concerning these
issues please contact CUE Local 6 President Marian Chapman.
All responses will be kept private.

Now that UC's been sent back to the table and ordered
to BARGAIN FAIR with CUE...
Let's tell UC: Don't be a Scrooge! Use some of those
FOUR BILLION DOLLARS you have in reserve to pay us
what we're worth!
Come join CUE and UPTE members to

The Regents are coming, the Regents are coming...
Let them hear from those of us who do work!
CUE-UPTE RALLY FOR UNION RIGHTS
at the UC Regents' Meeting
Print off a flyer!
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19
11:30 am to 1:00 pm
at the LAUREL HEIGHTS Campus
(3333 California St., corner of Laurel)
- For months, CUE and UPTE have bargained with UC for
months for fair contracts -- and both unions have met
with UC's unfair, illegal practices at the bargaining
table.
- UC refuses to agree to fair raises for CUE and UPTE
workers, even though it has over two billion dollars
in unrestricted funds that it could use to fund
raises.
- On the 19th, RALLY with members of all the UC unions
to tell the Regents:
ENOUGH! BARGAIN FAIR WITH OUR UNIONS!
Bring your co-workers! We can't do it without you!

We just had the most incredible demonstration! What a outpouring!
Lines were three deep to sign the pledge cards calling for a strike.
This is by far the best demo ever attended at UCSF. The walkout is certainly an idea whose time has come! (good press coverage as well - check out KRON!)
It's true, the demo ROCKED. We got 240 (!!) strike
pledge cards signed, and maybe half that many new
members.
Just to let everyone know: this demo was
planned by clericals who attended a series of building
meetings we had over the past 2 weeks. The theme of
the meetings was "Will it take a strike?", which
brought out a lot of pissed-off people, as well as
people who didn't know enough to be pissed off, but
wanted to know what the fuss was about.
Our demo was pretty simple: we had a table with the
strike pledge forms (we used Berkeley's & just changed them to SF, thank you Berkeley) and with black
armbands (we ran out!). We had made some signs &
noisemakers (pop cans with coins inside taped shut), &
had
chant sheets (many of the chants were stolen from
Jonathan Petty of BK, thanks Jonathan, check 'em out
folks, they're on the website). It was an amazing
turnout, and people were really glad to be there and
to be yelling at UC!
Any campus can do it -- I think that using the "s"
word (strike of course) is a good way to get people
out. Having the meetings beforehand, too, really
helped with the turnout. Now we have to really start
working on getting people involved to get us to the
point where we really COULD do a walkout. We have a
ways to go but this is a GREAT start. Hopefully we
can start doing demos on a regular basis.

Mr Peanut and a contingent of about eight UCSF employees stopped by to visit
the Chancellor today at 11:30 AM, but, alas, he wasn't in his office.
Despite Mr. Peanut's disappointment, he maintained his cheery demeanor and
even left gifts!!
The first present was an attractively designed report on the difference in
impact between bonuses and base-raising salary increases for employees of
UPTE and CUE. This had a great graph on the last page that charted just how
much money would be lost to individual employees! The second gift had been
HANDMADE by employees of both unions as well as other concerned members of
the campus community: it was a packet of individually signed survey cards
letting the Chancellor know exactly our opinions about wages.
The courteous clerical staff in the Chancellor's graciously received the
gifts and assured us that they would be seen by the Chancellor.
