In response to several inquiries, we're forwarding the text of a
recent letter from Assemblymember Christine Kehoe to Chancellor

Dear Chancellor Dynes,
I had the opportunity of October 2, 2002 to join AFSCME, CUE, AFT,
UPTE, in a rally by UCSD employees protesting the lack of contracts.
We went to your office to speak with you or your representative. I was
disappointed that no one even gave a courtesy greeting to your own
employees. This lackadaisical and stalling response is off-putting to
any productive labor negotiation. It contributes to what looks like an
unresponsive University. Your workers deserve better. A polite
greeting from your office would have gone a long way toward more open
and courteous communication.
Unfortunately, this experience reflects my own. During my two years in
the Assembly I have had repreated meetings with representatives of the
President's office. However, I am no better informed as to UC's efforts
to resolve your labor problems than I was at the beginning of my term.
I am frustrated and disappointed in how this labor situation is being
handled and would welcome knowing what plans are in place to resolve it.
I know how hard you work to improve the University community. I know we
share a deep appreciation of UCSD's many contributions to San Diego,
California and beyond. That is why I find it difficult to understand
why UCSD appears to not be part of finding a solution to this labor
situation. Please call me at your earliest convenience. I look
forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Chris
