Santa Cruz led the way to the
CUE statewide strike, June 13, 14, 15, 2005.
Here are some things we've done in the past:
Oct. 14 & 15, 2002: STRIKE! We virtually shut down the campus with strong support of all campus unions. Student Labor Action Coalition made
two huge support banners and brought 2000 signed support pledges from
students; very strong faculty support many departments completely closed;
trades workers represented by AFSCME wouldn't cross the lines;
visible support from SEIU, UC-AFT, UPTE. Some problems with the campus
police -- one student cited for "stopping traffic." About 500 people at
noon rally. Campus reported quieter than during the summer between
summer sessions -- parking lots empty, nobody walking around.
Chancellor Marcie Greenwood was teaching her first class in the afternoon
-- several hundred strikers and community and student supporters marched on the Chancellor's
class.
Sept. 5, 2002: SOLIDARITY RALLY--An Injury to One is an Injury to All!
Thursday, Sept 5 at 12 noon and continuing EVERY first Thursday of
the month until WE ALL have Fair Contracts! Sponsored by University
Labor United, the new coalition of all UCSC's Unions.
Sept. 2, 2002: Labor Day Picnic, 12noon to 5pm at DeLaveaga Park, Santa Cruz, sponsored by the Monterey Bay Central Labor Council.
August 28, 2002: 3 days of rallies in support of CUE local 3 in Berkeley. We have made history at UCSC in terms of our numbers and
show of union solidarity from students, campus unions, and the local community. Our stuggle for raises, rights, and respect has just begun.
October 18, 2000: Today we had a large rally at the library, in front of the
chancellor's office - there must have been 200 people - it was
organized by our Coalition so people from UPTE, CUE, AFSCME and AFT
were there, including my boss, who's a 99. It was a great event.
People are getting fed up. People took turns making speeches, did
some chanting - both Jennifer and I spoke - people took t-shirts,
signed the strike petition. There was much cheering whenever we used
the word "strike" - UPTE and AFT are also without a contract right
now and AFSCME is in re-openers. I think that means they can't strike
right? But the others can. It was a great event and many more are
planned.
