Local Events - UCSB
Bargaining came to UCSB on December 3-4, 2003. CUE members and friends rallied in support of our team. Here are photos of the
12-3-03 rally.
Here are some things we have done in the past:
- 2/26/2003: CUE staged a mock Depression-era "Regentsville" complete with soup line and skits about UC in a tug of war over contract issues.
- 10/14-16/2002: Hundreds of clericals walked off the job in protest of UC's unfair labor practices. Strongly supported by UC-AFT lecturers, students, and union members and sympathizers from all over UCSB, our strike drew the attention of the media and Teamsters' sanction. Many classes were cancelled or relocated to the picket lines, departments were shut down, and deliveries turned back. On the last day, hundreds rallied throughout the campus demanding respect and fair play from the campus labor relations and the chancellor who was unavailable for comment.
- 9/23/2002: CUE held a strike authorization vote. Our membership grew to over 50% as clericals were encouraged to join and vote the same day. With 88% of CUE's members turning out to vote, an overwhelming majority (90%) voted YES to authorize a legal strike of up to three days.
- 9/12/2002: CUE held our largest membership meeting ever. Over 100 CUE members overwhelmingly voted to go forward with plans for a strike authorization vote if UC did not cease its unfair labor practices at the table. UC and CUE were meeting in negotiations that very day and the next day. This week we learned that UC continued its bad-faith by "clarifying" that the 1.5% offered for 2002-2003 was contingent on funding from the State budget. CUE considers this further evidence of UC's regressive bargaining tactics (see Bargaining Report #24).
- 8/26-28/2002: CUE had actions all three days during Berkeley's strike.
- Monday 8/26/02 -- 7:30-8:30am small rally at east gate
- Monday 8/26/02 -- 11am-2pm silent vigil and outreach in arbor (for all those who say they don't like loud rallies)
- Tuesday 8/27/02 -- Noon rally in front of UCEN followed by march through campus.
- Wednesday 8/28/02 -- 11am-2pm brown bag lunch and rally in front of Cheadle.
- 7/12/2002: CUE President, Debbie Ceder, presented Chancellor Yang with a letter calling for his support.
- 5/1/2002: CUE participated in the UCSB May Day Rally and marched with the renewed Coalition of Unions to deliver a letter to Yang.
- 4/27/2002: CUE encouraged members to participate in the Santa Barbara People's March for Economic Justice.
- 1/8/2002: Nexus Opinion: UC Has the Money, Obligation to Pay Us Well.
- During the 2000 negotiations, we used to have weekly rallies on Fridays at noon. We would meet outside the library in front of the Arbor at noon, some wearing a "Fridays I Work For Free" T-shirt. We would bring pots and pans to bang, other noisemakers, we made up signs, and we'd march to the front of Cheadle Hall to let them know we need a living wage. Read about our first rally and see some pictures!
- 8/25/2000: Letter to Chancellor Yang was delivered on our first rally 8/25/00.
