Clerical workers' voices rang clearly today through Cheadle
Hall and the Chancellor's office. Approximately 30 clerical staff
members participated in a rally on Friday, 25 August, 2000 that
started at the Arbor outside the UCSB library, ending at Cheadle
Hall. Clerical staff members marched to the administrative heart of
the campus chanting slogans like "Tired of CUE in your face, Get some
justice in this place!" They were joined by several students and
other supporters who marched with them around Cheadle Hall calling
for "wage increases" and "a fair contract". CUE has been in
bargaining for over two years for its first contract with the
University.
The Chancellor was in the middle of a meeting regarding Highway 217 when the rallying workers arrived at the front of Cheadle Hall. Shortly after some of the clerical staff left the rally to resume work, the Chancellor arrived to meet with the remaining activists to accept a letter written by CUE. The letter urged the Chancellor to support CUE in its bargaining efforts to restore clerical staff wages' buying power. Chancellor Yang agreed that the clerical staff are a vital part of the campus community, and that he supports CUE's efforts to reach a fair contract. He also agreed to make our concerns known to the Office of the President and he will urge other chancellors to also support CUE throughout the UC system. This was the first of a series of weekly rallies CUE plans to have. Please spread the word and meet outside the Arbor next Friday at noon with pots and pans and other noisemakers to lend support to CUE's campaign for fair wages and a decent contract.
