Local Actions - UCLA
October 6, 2000:
Pictures!!
Approximately 175-200 UCLA employees (CUE and UPTE) and students met at
noon and marched to Murphy Hall (UCLA's administration building),
accompanied by a huge puppet version of Chancellor Albert Carnesale! We
had pots and pans and soda cans filled with dried beans as noisemakers
-- and a newly purchased bullhorn which turned out to have a loud
siren.
We loitered briefly outside Murphy Hall, but when we found out that
Richard Atkinson was speaking down the street at the Faculty Center, we
decided it would be very rude not to say howdy. We wandered on down,
but for some reason they wouldn't let us in. In fact, they drew the
curtains so that the diners wouldn't have to see us (though they could
hardly not HEAR us). Decidedly unhospitable.
We went back to meet with the Chancellor, and both Cliff Fried (Exec VP
of UPTE) and Claudia Horning (President of CUE) got in to see him. Cliff presented him with a basket of peanuts, representing UPTE wages. Claudia gave him a CUE t-shirt, since
until recently he himself was underpaid by 19%, so he was also donating
a day a week to the University. We thought he could empathize.
Carnesale came about as close to a public statement of support as we've
ever heard from him. "I support a fair resolution of negotiations, and
I want to make it clear that I do not believe the status quo is a fair
situation" (or words to that effect).
