CUE Riverside members will vote September 19-20 on whether to hold a legal Unfair Labor Practice strike. Only full, dues paying members of CUE are eligible to vote. Clericals who are not yet members may fill out a membership application and join in order to add their voice.
If we strike, the purpose of our strike will be to protest the University’s unfair labor practices. The University, we charge, is breaking California’s labor laws by, among other things, engaging in bad faith bargaining, failing to give our bargainers the information which they need to bargain, unilaterally changing terms and conditions of employment without bargaining with CUE, and terminating “limited term” employees in order to keep them from reaching career status, in contradiction with an agreement with CUE.
If we strike, it will be in protest of these unfair labor practices. After CUE members vote to strike, the strike could be averted if the University were to take steps to reverse these labor law violations. Unfair labor practice strikes are legal and are protected under California law. The University has, and will continue to send out memos threatening employees about their possible participation in a strike. We have consulted, and continue to consult with our legal counsel and want to assure you of your legal rights.
Be assured, we are NOT voting on an economic strike, which requires an impasse, it is NOT about the wage proposal, it is NOT a sick out, it is NOT illegal as the University would have you believe. We are voting on a strike to protest the illegal and unfair labor practices in which the University has engaged. You cannot be disciplined for joining a picket line or staying away from work. You cannot be replaced by a permanent replacement. You cannot suffer reprisal after you return to work for having participated in the strike. You may lose pay for the time you are on strike.
Also, it is illegal for University managers and supervisors to quiz you about your support for CUE, or to ask you if you intend to honor the picket line. Let us know immediately if you are illegally questioned or intimidated in this way.
Why are we considering a strike? UC has consistently shown a blatant lack of concern and respect for the workers who make this University operate. Now, the University is committing illegal unfair labor practices. As members of the University Community, we are offended by the University’s failure to bargain and the illegal practices they have utilized. Now is the time to stick together and show the University that collectively, we will make our voices heard and receive the respect we deserve. Even at Quiet Riverside Campus, we are angry enough to say NO MORE!
In Solidarity,
The CUE Riverside Strike Committee
