October 13, 2000 Rally
Friday, October 13, 2000: Our rally today was great! Almost 100 people there, chanting and marching and posting post-its to the Chancellors' door windows (police said we couldn't do his redwood door!). The post-its were short messages showing financial hardships...things clericals wouldn't be able to buy or do this year because of insufficient wages. Our campus newspaper, the Highlander, put one of these pictures on the front page - a small clip of some of the post-its on the Chancellor's door with the heading "Orbach's Sticky Situation". Underneath the picture is an article titled "UC to study California employment issues". The UC Institute for Labor and Employment
Issues (ILE) has made $6 million available to faculty and other academic
staff for a multi-campus research initiative. It says "The program was
created in July 2000 by a legislative grant to the UC. It will promote
research on statewide policy oriented employment problems. The institute
will build on pre-existing research by the Institutes of Industrial
Relations at UC Berkley and UCLA and welcomes all interested faculty,
staff, and students throughout the UC system to become involved." Any takers?
