ORGANIZER/LABOR REPRESENTATIVE
JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Executive Board of CUE Local 2 at Riverside, the incumbent may be asked to perform the following duties, as the need arises and in the context of a 40-hour workweek. There may be some variance in schedule, and some need for overtime.
Grievance Coordinator
Central liaison/coordinator
Represents employees at grievance resolution meetings
Represents union at employee and labor-management meetings
Represents union at arbritation hearings
Represents union at unfair labor hearings
Record/time keeper for locals' grievances
Good judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information and situations
Organizer Duties
Recruit new members
Meet and greet
Attend new employee orientations
Create and maintain new member packets
"Tabling" at various union functions
Regular building meetings and visits
Follow up new employees with union materials
Organize and participate in rallies, demonstrations, and meetings (including, but not limited to:
Board, member, In-Person E Board on our campus, and coalition meetings)
Coalition of Unions liaison
Deal with and handle problems and questions from the jurisdiction
Identify potential activists, provide resources and mentoring
Develop flyers, posters, buttons, slogans, and other campaign related materials and items
Develop and maintain contacts with media
Develop and provide member-training sessions
Develop and provide future contract campaigns
Develop local legislative contacts
Office Duties
Regular office hours
Checking phone messages and returning calls
Maintain mailing lists
Draft memos and emails
Keep board advised of any developments regarding potential problems, hot issues, and activities union
needs to be involved in
Computer literate
Email management
Checking email regularly
Sending out email
Managing email lists, such as jurisdiction, members, campus managers, etc.
Word processing (Word)
Spreadsheet (Excel)
Internet knowledge
Fax, photocopying, and filing
Run errands pertaining to union activities
Shop for union materials
Maintain and inventory local supplies
And other duties as assigned
Job requirements
Experienced grievance handler
Prior organizing experience
Experienced trainer
Flexible working hours
"People-person" -- Excellent interpersonal and group communication skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Detail oriented
Adaptable to different environments (departments on campus vary in formality of dress, etc.), neat
appearance, accessibility to buildings varies
Ability to work with and take direction from the local board
Supervisor will be president of local or designate, note that this may be a different person every two
years
Self-motivated.
Able to work independently
Patience, persistence and flexibility
Enthusiasm and tact
Positive attitude
Keep a log of duties, activities, and time
Familiarity with the Riverside campus preferred
