Dear Chancellor Cicerone and President Atkinson,
I learned today that UC has proposed to give its highly valued clerical workers a whopping 0.9% COLA and no merit. I find this to be quite appropriate that UC suggested this increase during the week we "celebrated" Staff Appreciation Day here at Irvine.
I will so appreciate telling my landlord that he can only increase my rent by 0.9% and my utility suppliers that they may only increase their charges by 0.9% and defer my student loans yet another year because the wages I currently earn while working full time at UC Irvine qualifies me to do so.
I will also appreciate telling my nieces and nephews that I can't visit them again this year because my salary as a Faculty Assistant to 4 senior faculty members in Cognitive Sciences, Economics and Anthropology doesn't cover this cost.
Thank you so much for this reminder of how much UC cares about its staff. If you consider this a reflection of your "appreciation" of us, I would hate to think about if we were on your bad side.
