August 2001
Dr. Atkinson: I know you are an extremely busy person, but I am compelled to write to you on behalf of all "Clericals". After just receiving the latest devastating news on the UCSD offer of an increase to us of 9/10ths of 1%, I feel it is insulting to the hardest working employee group in the University system! You are probably not aware of what this increase amounts to for someone at the top of the salary range (AAII) and presently being paid $2917 per month. This amounts to a little over $300 per year!
I would like to add that I have worked in the University for almost 10 years as an Administrative Assistant II (because I cannot get a reclass). I am, and have been for the past 4 1/2 years, the office administrator. I manage the office and work on grants, budgets, protocols, manuscripts, handle phones, set up meetings, make conference calls, arrange travel, etc etc etc. Without me, or someone like me, the department could not operate. I feel that we are unfairly discriminated against and we are the lowest paid people on campus. Why is that? We hold extremely vital positions within the University.
Staff Research Associates, who have very specific duties, make around $600 per month more than Clericals at this time and have just received a 4.3% increase. Why is that?
I love my job and find it challenging. I work whatever hours are necessary to get the job done and haven't had one increase in 4 years! I would like to suggest that the powers that be in the University system do a restructuring of salary scales.
Thank you very much for your time in reading this memo.
Respectfully, and very sincerely,
Sheila Neely, UCSD
