Letter from McDole - UCSD

August 2001

Dear Sirs:

CUE has just informed its members that UC's Chief Negotiator recently made a wage increase offer of .9% and no merits for 2001-2002. If this is to be the caliber offer UC brings to the table for these new rounds of bargaining, things are likely to get ugly quickly.

We are all aware of the poor economy and reduced funding that are adversely affecting UC's budget. But deciding to compensate for this reduced funding by staunching the meager flow of wages allowed for your lowest-paid employees indicates not only a misguided set of priorities, but also a fundamental disrespect for the men and women who make up this most populous of UC unions.

In short, there are unrestricted reserves and local funds that UC has the discretion to use as it sees fit. We, the 18,000 members of CUE whose day-to-day hard work keeps UC operating smoothly, suggest that UC weigh the options and do what's right for its clerical employees.

Sincerely,
Richard McDole, UCSD
