August 2001
To UC President Richard Atkinson, & Chancellor Robert C. Dynes,
0.9% increase will not help me get through the months ahead. I urge you to reconsider from a "part-time college student who is working full time to pay for college" perspective. Let me start off with my take-home salary and deduct from there:
$1526.33 a month salary
subtract $350.00 for rent (I live with roommates so I can get by.)
$1176.33
subtract $287.00 for car payment
$889.33
subtract $98.00 for car insurance
$791.33
subtract $40.00 for apartment utilities (SDGE {their prices went up},
Pacbell {local}, Verizon {long distance}, Cox Cable {cheaper than the
movies}).
$751.33
subtract parking for my UC job, around $50.00
$701.33
subtract $200.00 for food (fruit and vegetables prices went up) fifty
dollars per week.
$501.33
subtract $100.00 for gas (which also went up in price) I spend about
$25 or more per week for my V6 truck.
$401.33 left.
For the last $401.33 left, I use that to pay off my cell phone ($34.99), credit card bills, plus regular maintenance on my truck ie: tune-ups, oil changes, brakes, car wash, tires, etc., school and school books (every semester I spend about $350.00). Plus whatever unforeseen emergency that pops up that requires immediate payment. And last but not least, the birthdays, holidays, and vacations that do come up.
Also, I sometimes venture out of my apartment to enjoy movies and eating out when I don't have time to make dinner.
Furthermore, I'm happy to say that I do not have a family to support because I couldn't support them properly if I did.
Once again thank you for your time and please reconsider a better cost of living increase.
Sincerely
Jason Jeremie Jared, UCSD
