MOTION: Move the following accounts from the California Bank & Trust to United Labor Bank:
Santa Cruz Local Reserve Savings
Santa Barbara Local Reserve Savings
Riverside Local Reserve Savings
LBNL Local Reserve Savings
SW Repayment Account
BACKGROUND AND MOTIVATION:
I was contacted by the United Labor Bank in Oakland, a local (Oakland) labor-friendly banking institution. They were soliciting business. I made some inquiries into interest rates for different types of accounts. They were willing to negotiate based on the amount of money deposited. My motivation is to try to diversify and protect our money as much as possible. The FDIC only protects up to $100,000 per banking institution. We have much more than that in our combined accounts in California Bank and Trust.
United Labor Bank offered the following interest rates for these accounts:
LBNL Local Reserve Savings 1.78% (vs. CB&T current rate of 0.45%)
Riverside Local Reserve Savings 1.78% (vs. CB&T current rate of 0.80%)
UCSB Local Reserve Savings 3.28% (vs. CB&T current rate of 1.40%)
UCSC Local Reserve Savings 3.28% (vs. CB&T current rate of 1.40%)
SW Repayment Account 3.28% (vs. CB&T current rate of 0.65%)
These would be Money Market accounts. The choice of these accounts was made because they are the ones with the smallest total deposit (so combining them will not present a risk to FDIC protection) and the smallest total interest rate (to try to get as much return as possible). Larger accounts should be moved to different banking institutions as well in order to protect them, and I will be looking into that, but this opportunity presented itself now.
