Dear Mr. Kaczmarek,
The Coalition of University Employees (CUE) is the independent, member-run union that represents nearly 18,000 clerical employees at the University of California. We are writing in connection with the recently-announced budget agreement, or compact, reached between UC President Dynes and Governor Schwarzenegger.
First, we want to assure you that we played no role in the development of this compact.
CUE supports the USAC's struggles to keep higher education accessible to students. We are still reviewing the compact itself, but we have serious concerns about the process by which it was developed, which failed to include unions, students, faculty or even the legislature.
We are completely opposed to the part of the compact that raises student fees. In addition, we have grave reservations about the proposed enrollment caps.
We look forward to working with students and other affected parties to keep the university accessible, and to improve the working and learning conditions of UC's students, staff and faculty.
Yours,
Claudia Horning
President, Coalition of University Employees
