Mediation & distortions both continue
Dear UC Clerical Employee:
We write to correct UC's most recent mis-statements about wage increases.
You may be aware of UC's formal response to a series of articles in the San Francisco Chronicle. The articles detail salary information for administrators and report that a total of approximately $871 million dollars was given to executives last year in the form of bonuses and other "perks." The total compensation figures show some 200 people receiving $400,000 and more (five of them receiving over $1,000,000, and 2,277 receiving $200,000 or more). The total income figures were not reported as "salary" in the Regents' recently released Mercer report, which recommended massive pay increases for top paid employees. This took place in a year when clericals received no salary increases. UC continues to maintain the lie that no staff at UC got an increase in 2003-04.
UC responded on its website by accusing the Chronicle of misstating the facts. UC claims that for 2005-06 "employees have received an average of 3.5%."
CUE wants you to know that in fact UC and CUE are still engaged in confidential mediation for this year. UC's wage offer prior to mediation was 3% effective October 1, 2005, not July 1, 2005, when the money was passed on to UC. CUE objects to UC's diverting this money to use for other purposes for a quarter of a year. So, the distortions by UC go on, even while UC asserts that it is correcting the Chronicle's so-called distortions. (In contrast, the California State University employees received their 3% of the state money effective July 1.)
Unfortunately, to date no agreement has been reached with UC. We will return to mediation November 21 and 22 and CUE will continue this long, difficult struggle for fair wages and a strong contract. Please contact President Dynes, your chancellor and legislators and express your outrage at UC's continued lack of public accountability.
You can locate your legislator's address easily at: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html. Dynes' and the Chancellors' addresses are at http://www.cueunion.org/resources/chancellors.php.
At the time of this writing, the total compensation figures are still available on the SF Chronicle's website at: http://www.sfgate.com/news/special/pages/2005/ucsalary/.
