Reopener Bargaining Report #8

On May 18th and 19th CUE met with UC for formal mediation, which is the first step in the impasse process.

Mediation is a confidential negotiating process that allows both parties the ability to explore ideas, language, and proposals that could lead towards the settlement of our contract. The mediation is a mandatory element of the impasse process.

At this meeting, no agreement was reached. Both CUE and UC are considering the possibility of some proposed language, about which it is premature to report at this time. Also, these changes are currently protected by the confidentiality of the mediation process.

CUE will meet with UC again on Thursday, June 24, 2004, at UCOP for, potentially, the final meeting between the two parties.
