Don't forget to vote!

May 23, 2005

Dear CUE member,

If you have already voted in the current strike vote, THANK YOU!

If you have not, please do so. However you vote, your vote is important. In fact, we need to have 40% of our members casting ballots for the vote to count officially. The CUE Statewide Executive Board endorses a "YES" vote.

(See more detailed information, including information about why we are encouraging a YES vote, below.)

Deadline to vote: 5:00 pm this Wednesday, May 25.

You can vote on the web by going to: http://www.responsetrack.net/cue/cue_survey

INSTRUCTIONS FOR VOTING

You can vote in one of two ways: 1. By computer; 2. By paper ballot through the local office on your campus (see phone numbers below to find out where your local office is and to get details about voting.

VOTING ON THE WEB:

If you vote on the web, you will need to know your 9-digit UC employee number, which you can get from your paycheck or deposit statement, from your staff identification card or badge, or from your department. This number is NOT your social security number. If you vote on the web, we can guarantee that UC will not have access to your vote if you vote from a non-UC computer. If you don't care if UC knows or not, use any computer. The computer program we are using requires that you identify yourself on the ballot. For confidentiality in voting, see below.

VOTING WITH A PAPER BALLOT:

If you want your vote to be by secret ballot, you should cast a paper ballot and not vote on the web.

Please vote only once. If we receive more than one ballot from any member, none of those votes will be counted from that member. Non-members may join and vote at the ballot box locations.

BALLOTS MUST BE CASE BY COMPUTER OR AT A LOCAL OFFICE BY 5:00 P.M., MAY 25.

STRIKE HARDSHIP BENEFITS

The Statewide Executive Board has authorized hardship funds for those who participate in whatever CUE strike is called by the Board. The conditions for this payment will be: The clerical worker needs to be on the picket line for at least 4 hours per day, in which case he or she will be eligible for $60 for that day, so long as he or she does not work any part of his/her UC work shift that day. The amount will be the same for those who are full-time UC employees and part-time UC employees.

Even though neutral fact-finder and arbitrator G. McKay recently ruled that UC can afford to give clerical pay raises, and even though he said that UC should give pay raises that are outlined in his fact-finding report (issued as part of the '03-04 bargaining), UC has refused to do so. As recently as May 2005, state legislators expressed shock and amazement that UC has not implemented the fact-finding report. UC clericals are in a unique position to hold a legal "economic" strike over issues of wages and benefits as bargained for '03-04 because we do not have a contract in effect right now.

For the strike vote to be valid, at least 40% of CUE members must cast votes. For the strike to go forward, at least 2/3 of those who vote must vote "YES." If we don't meet those two standards, we send the message to the University that we are satisfied with our present wages!
