April 12, 2007
Dear CUE Member,
At the February 2007 in-person statewide executive board meeting, the board
voted to set aside the 2006 election results and re-run the entire statewide
election. In the meantime, current officers (those who obtained the most votes
in that election) will remain in place until a new election can be organized.
In order to have a fair election, the following parameters will be put into
place:
- An election procedures manual is being drafted and will be adopted as a
guide for this and future elections. For instance, the possibility of allowing
for in-person voting in statewide elections will be considered.
- Updating our membership contact information: In the next few months, we
hope to make sure we have the most accurate information to use when mailing out
election materials, ballots, and other important matters through U.S. mail. In
the meantime, if you haven't received any literature from CUE in the last year
or so through US mail (vs. email), this would be a great time to contact your
local and bring the union up to date on your mailing address.
- Clarifying voting status and increasing membership: We want it to be clear
to all UC clericals that only members of CUE may vote in union elections, may
vote on proposed contracts with UC dealing with clerical wages and working
conditions, etc. If you have co-workers who pay "fair share" (or "agency")
fees but not membership dues, they should be reminded that every clerical can
become a voting member by filling out a membership form. The monthly deduction
from their paychecks will increase by only a dollar or so.
We look forward to establishing a statewide election committee soon and will
keep you informed as the election process unfolds.
