CUE DECERTIFICATION AND AFFILIATION WITH TEAMSTERS

Dear CUE colleague,

After learning of AFSCME efforts to decertify CUE, members of your Executive Board formed a committee to identify the different options to CUE to stop this decertification. This committee spent many hours interviewing other unions that would allow CUE to remain autonomous and keep our organization as a member-run union. After many hours of deliberation, the committee made a recommendation to CUE's Executive Board to affiliate with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT). On April 1, 2010, a vote was taken by members of CUE's Executive Board who represent all our UC campuses, and the majority voted to affiliate with the Teamsters and establish an independent local. According to Article XV. Affiliation or Dissolution, of our CUE's Constitution, we will be conducting an election to ratify this vote. This election will start on April 7, 2010 and will end on April 21, 2010.

Only CUE members as of April 1, 2010, will be eligible to vote. These members will receive a ballot and instructions by mail. Members pay dues and non-members pay fair-share fees. Check your UC Earnings Statement, at the bottom under "Other Deductions." If it says "CUE dues" you are a voting member. If it says "CUE fair share" you are not a voting member.

As an affiliate of an international union, we gain leverage at the bargaining table as well as lobbying strength with the State of California. The Teamsters have 1.4 million members organized under 21 divisions that include virtually every occupation imaginable, both professional and non-professional, private and public sector http://www.teamster.org/content/who-we-represent-0.

We will be sending additional information in a few days about the state wide election needed to proceed with this affiliation. We encourage you to research how joining the mighty arms of the Teamsters (IBT) will benefit CUE at www.teamsters856.org, www.teamsters853.org, & www.teamsterslocal70.org.

In-person meetings will be held at your campus to answer any questions you may have regarding affiliation. Please attend these meetings.

CUE represents 14,000 clerical and allied services employees of the University of California. Your "YES" vote for the affiliation with the Teamsters will make CUE one hundred times stronger.
