Berkeley / UCOP Local #3
As CUE's plans for a strike of UCB and UCOP clericals on August 26-28 are finalized, more campus workers are announcing that they are preparing to join the strike and are volunteering for picket assignments.
Support pours in from various sources.
As soon as CUE gave formal notice to UC of its intent to strike, CNA sent a notice to UC that nurses would not cross the picket lines but instead would engage in a sympathy strike for the entire three days.
Lecturers, represented by the AFT, announced yesterday that they are also engaging in work stoppage on the same dates next week. They have obtained official strike sanction from the AFL-CIO Alameda Central Labor Council which means non-campus workers such as UPS drivers, construction workers and other delivery people will honor our picket lines.
The UCB Coalition of Unions staged a rally yesterday, at which an impressive 500 people gathered including students, faculty, and staff. Speaking for the Alameda County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, Council Head Judy Goff pledged support from the Council's unions for our AFT/CUE strike, and Father Bill O'Donnell, of St. Joseph the Worker's Church, gave his encouragement for, and blessing of, the upcoming strike.
Several student organizations are working to educate the student community about the strike and will join us on the picket lines.
We have heard of many faculty who are canceling classes and coming up with additional creative ways to support the staff.
The ILWU (International Longshore and Warehouse Union) will send picketers and write Governor Davis on our behalf regarding the bad faith bargaining practices of UC. They have voted to support our strike as we voted, at CUE's last membership meeting, to support them in their contract fight with the Pacific Maritime Association.
Local and statewide politicians have lined up in support of CUE's efforts, including: Berkeley Mayor Shirley Dean, Vice-Mayor Maudelle Shirek, Councilmember Kris Worthington, Representative Dion Aroner, Representative Wilma Chan and Lt. Governor Cruz M. Bustamante. Candidates for office who have expressed support include Berkeley mayoral candidate Tom Bates and California gubernatorial candidate Peter Camejo.
Already the SF Chronicle, LA Times, NY Times, Contra Costa Times, Singtao Daily, the Daily Cal, the Daily Planet, the Sacramento Bee, KGO and KPFA radio, local and network TV news have covered our imminent strike. (See links to some recent print articles.
For updated strike information call: (888/ 900-8989) or go to the CUE website.
PS CUE Local 3's Executive Board recently voted to support the United Farm Workers in their battle to have Governor Davis sign legislation that will help secure their rights to bargain contracts.
