I just heard that there will be a picket line in front of UC Press on Monday morning. In that regard, I would urge each of you to consider seriously the importance of not crossing a picket line. As you know, these workers are fighting to improve working conditions for all of us; in my mind, they are deserving of our utmost support.
From another perspective, consider the work that we do at UC Press. Our publishing house has a progressive publishing tradition--in the last years we have published books like The Price of Dissent: Testimonies to Political Repression in America, about the sacrifices undertaken by labor, civil rights and anti-Vietnam activists; Black Workers Remember: An Oral History of Segregation, Unionism, and the Freedom Struggle, about the struggles of African-American workers; Domestica: Cleaning and Caring in the Shadow of Affluence, by Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo--all of Pierrette's royalties are being donated to an organization fighting to unionize domestic workers; Factories in the Field: The Story of Migratory Farm Labor in California, by Carey McWilliams, about the valiant efforts of farm workers to organize: and The Children of Nafta: Labor War and Solidarity on the US/Mexico Border, by David Bacon, about current struggles to unionize on both sides of the border. The list could go on and on.
What does it mean to publish these important books about the brave efforts of downtrodden workers to fight for better working conditions if we ignore the struggles of our own union activists battling for better working conditions here at UC Press and at the university at large?
I will also be putting a message on my email informing authors of the labor actions being undertaken at the University of California Press and would urge all of you to do the same. I understand that CUE workers are meeting at 7:30 at Center/Oxford on Monday morning; a portion of these workers will be marching to UC Press at the time.
