2004-2005: Bargaining Report #11: October 11-12, 2005
CUE and UC bargainers met with mediator Paul Roose of the State Conciliation
and Mediation Services on October 11 and 12 in Oakland. This was the initial
mediation session for the successor contract negotiations. Due to the
confidentiality requirements of the mediation process, reporting during the
mediation period will be general in nature without discussion of the specific
proposals presented.
On Tuesday, October 25, CUE and UC bargainers will meet without the mediator
present -- in hopes of resolving the status of a select number of articles of
the contract before meeting with the mediator again on November 2 and 3. Those
articles are: Corrective Action/Discipline; Grievance Procedure; Hours of
Work; Leaves of Absence; Past Practice; Positions/Appointments; and Sick Leave.
At the conclusion of the second day of mediation, both teams voiced sentiments
encouraged by the progress which had been made, and the mood in the room was
positive. The bargaining teams have agreed to schedule additional mediation
sessions to the calendar, on November 21-22, if needed.
