Bargaining Update #26: Feb. 18, 2003
Dear UC Clerical:
In December 2002, CUE proposed to UC that we meet with a mediator to
try to reach agreement on the issues still outstanding in contract
negotiations: Layoff, Health & Safety, and Wages, to name the most
important. Finally, in early January 2003, UC accepted our proposal
for voluntary mediation.
CUE and UC met for mediation for the first time on January 14, 2003.
Our mediator is from the California State Mediation and Conciliation
Service, which is cost free to both parties.
At the first session, we were asked to agree that the proposals
exchanged in mediation and the content of our discussions be kept
confidential until we reached agreement or agreed that the process
could go no further. We met again with the mediator on January
30/31. The CUE Bargaining Team believes this process is worthwhile
and may lead to resolution of all outstanding issues.
We are currently scheduled to meet on February 20/21 and February 27/28.
CUE proposed this process, and we are committed to reaching agreement
with UC. We need your support to encourage UC to make the same
commitment. Please take a moment to send an e-mail urging your campus
Chancellor and UC President Atkinson
to commit fully to reaching contract agreement through mediation. With
equal effort, UC and CUE can finalize our contract.
Thank you.
