Bargaining Update #25: Oct. 10-11, 2002
CUE and UC bargained on October 10 and 11. On the afternoon of
October 10, UC presented CUE with the same package for the third
time, including the salary offer of a 1.5% increase effective October
1, 2002. UC bargainers said that CUE had to agree by October 31,
2002 to all contract articles or UC might do something else with the
money. We pointed out that threats harm the bargaining process.
There was almost no movement on the other items in the package. The
only change from UC's previous positions -- which CUE has already
rejected -- was a promise to begin doing ergonomic reviews for all
new employees within 30 days of the signing of the contract, as
opposed to their previous proposal of 120 days. UC still refuses to
guarantee that prescribed ergonomic improvements will actually be
implemented or to include stress as a health and safety issue.
On Friday, October 11, we met informally with UC representatives to
discuss the issue of temporary/floater employees -- another meeting
on that issue is scheduled for this Friday, October 18.
All of these negotiations took place before the very successful
strike actions on several campuses on October 14 and 15. CUE
statewide will meet this weekend to plan a response.
