Bargaining Update #2: June 12-13, 2001, UC San Diego Medical Center

CUE and UC met near the UC San Diego Medical Center on June 12 and 13, 2001. CUE presented proposals for improvements for the following contract articles: Health & Safety, Hours of Work, Layoff, Parking, Performance Evaluations, Transfer/Promotion/Reclassification, University Benefits, Work Load, and Work Rules.

We were disappointed to learn that UC's chief negotiator, Sharon Hayden, will be unavailable to bargain from September 7 through September 30. This is of particular concern to us because our current contract expires on September 30, 2001. We informed UC that we were not willing to suspend bargaining for nearly a month and urged them to have an alternate chief negotiator with full authority to bargain prepared to step in. UC assured us that they would do that.

UC asked many questions about the CUE proposals and has promised to make counter offers. We are hopeful that we will be able to make significant improvements in the articles we presented.

For example, CUE has presented proposals that would increase workplace safety and provide greater ergonomic protections.

Your input is needed

CUE would like to ask for your help in defining health and safety issues. Please send us your experiences with health and safety at work. One of the issues the University talked about was "ordinary risks" one might expect with any job. How would you define "ordinary risk"? Have you ever been asked to do something you thought was too dangerous? Did you talk to your supervisor about your concerns? What was your supervisor's response? Please share with us your ideas and experiences.

We were joined in bargaining by local San Diego activists on both days. Their willingness to come to observe and support the team is greatly appreciated. Remember, bargaining is open to any member of the clerical unit and we urge you to join us when we bargain at your location. The team appreciates the support and we think it's important for UC to know that clericals are concerned and watching.

We set dates with UC for future bargaining sessions. Those dates are:

June 27-29, 2001 at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
July 11-13, 2001 at UC Irvine
July 18-20, 2001 in northern California (Berkeley, Davis, Santa Cruz or SF)
Aug 1-3, 2001 at UCLA
Aug 15-17, 2001 in northern California (at one of the locations where we have not yet met)

We also agreed to reserve July 26-27 and Aug 28-30 for possible bargaining dates as needed. When locations have been determined we will let you know. Meanwhile, if you want to join us in bargaining, please check the CUE web site for information for bargaining observers.
