Bargaining Update #13: Nov. 28-29, 2001
CUE & UC met in Riverside on 11/28/01.
The first order of business was CUE's notification to UC that the union had
decided not to extend the contract beyond November 30, 2001. CUE had
agreed to two previous extensions, the most recent through November 30,
2001, in the hopes of encouraging progress in bargaining. However, little
progress has been made in the last two months and CUE's bargaining team
and executive board felt that further extensions would not be
useful. Look for a FAQ about the contract expiration coming soon to this website.
In this short session, UC gave CUE a package proposal containing 19
articles with changes in only 4 articles: Hours of Work, Health and
Safety, Positions, Transfer/Promotion/Reclass. CUE reviewed UC's
proposals and asked a number of clarifying questions, and is considering
its response.
At our previous session of November 6 - 9, UC had made another package
proposal and then suddenly withdrew it. At this session, they indicated
that a modification of that package would be back on the table when we meet
again.
The December 10-12 bargaining will be held at the CUE statewide office in
Berkeley, at 2855 Telegraph. Please feel free to stop by and sit in on
bargaining if you are in the neighborhood.
