Bargaining Update #1: May 30, 31, June 1, 2001, Oakland, CA
Last week CUE and UC met to begin bargaining CUE's second contract. In an
opening presentation, CUE chief negotiator Margy Wilkinson said in part: "We
know that many in the University community remember that it took us over two
years to bargain our first contract. This time we hope to be able to bargain
more quickly to make changes to the contract and to reach agreement on reasonable
improvements to our wages and the wage structure. However we want you to know
from the outset that we are prepared to meet as often and for as long as it takes
to get an agreement we feel is worth taking to our members."
CUE presented UC with an overview of our concerns for the upcoming negotiations
and responded to UC's questions regarding the issues we had raised. As the
bargainers prepared to break for lunch on the first day, more than 50 Bay Area
CUE members rallied outside the bargaining room at UCOP's offices in Oakland to
support the CUE team. The statewide bargaining team joined the lively rally and
were introduced to the crowd. Attempts were made to dampen spirits by turning on
the outside sprinklers; however neither ralliers nor CUE bargainers were deterred.
CUE and UC will meet again on June 12, 2001 at the Unitarian church across
the street from the UCSD Medical Center. In the meantime, UC agreed it
would look into some of the issues CUE raised and CUE agreed to present UC
with formal written language on a number of proposals.
