CUE and UC bargained May 11 and 12, at UC Irvine.
In this session CUE made a comprehensive proposal as the basis for a
fair and final contract settlement. This proposal includes our most
recent offer for a decent wage increase -- 6% for last year, and 5% for
next year -- which will only begin to bring us back to the earning
power we had in 1992. In addition, as part of the same package, we
presented articles on Work Rules, the Right to Strike, Parking, and
Respectful Fair Treatment (which includes non-discrimination).
CUE worked hard to craft proposals which we feel would be agreeable to
any reasonable employer -- at the same time we stood our ground on
issues important to all of us. If UC were willing to do their part and
match our commitment to settle this contract, we would be able to do
so. We are not sure at this point if UC is similarly committed.
CUE is actively pursuing the unfair labor practice charge that we filed
in April on UC's bad faith bargaining.
We reached tentative agreement on two more articles, Uniforms and
Subcontracting. We discussed Work Rules, Policies, and Leaves of
Absence, as well as Performance Evaluations. During these discussions,
UC expressed continued interest in regulating the conduct of clericals
outside of work hours and away from the work site.
We ask for your ongoing support. Please let UC know that you agree with
CUE -- clericals deserve a decent contract and fair wages.
Bargaining continues May 18-19 at UC Office of the President in
Oakland.
