2003-2004: Reopener Bargaining Update #6: January 21-22, 2004, Berkeley, CA
CUE met with UC in Berkeley and Oakland on January 21 and 22. On
the second day, UC advised the union that even though money had been
found to give other employees increases (specifically academic student
employees, who will see 1.5% in increases), there was no money for
increases for the clerical unit. CUE members from Berkeley campus
and LBNL addressed the UC team, giving testimonials as to why
clericals should be given increases. However in spite of their
compelling testimony, UC remained firm: no raises for clericals! UC
also indicated that it is not changing its position on the need to increase
benefit costs.
A group of supporters marched from the Berkeley campus to the
statewide CUE office to support the union bargainers, including a group
of clericals who came from UCLA to sit in on bargaining. The group
included the president of the UCLA local, Leesa Dawson-Norwood, and
the statewide president of CUE, Claudia Horning, also from the UCLA
campus.
CUE and UC have agreed to continue to discuss the pay of Dispatchers
at Riverside and Irvine and wages for clericals at LBNL.
No further bargaining is scheduled until after this week's bargaining at
LBNL.
CUE expects UC to take steps to move the bargaining process to
impasse.
