2003-2004: Reopener Bargaining Update #1: August 21-22, 2003, Santa Cruz, CA
CUE and UC are back in negotiations, this time for just three issues:
wages, parking, and health benefits. These three articles, which were
included in the 2001-04 contract that we signed in April, have been
"reopened" for bargaining new language that will be effective the last
year of the 2001-04 contract. (Thus, some refer to this as "reopener"
bargaining.)
CUE met with UC on August 21 and 22, 2003 for the first session of
negotiations.
CUE presented UC with our general principles for reopener bargaining.
CUE's plan is to work for equity for the lowest-paid workers and to
address costs and conditions for parking and benefits.
CUE is now developing language that will support these principles and
provide a basis for bargaining in the coming months.
The CUE team is encouraged by UC's verbal commitment to fulfill CUE's
request for information necessary to develop our proposals and move
forward with bargaining.
CUE's chief negotiator, Mark Covington, and bargaining team member
Linda Moser will be meeting with UC's chief negotiator at UCOP on
September 9th for an informational discussion of UC finances.
Bargaining will resume on October 9 in Irvine and October 21, 22 at
UCSF. CUE's bargaining team encourages every member to participate
by attending bargaining at his or her campus.
